I just received an email from the Heartmath Institute for a free downloadable ebook entitled 12 Heartmath Tools for Reducing Stress and Staying Balanced. Some of you might find it useful at this time so here's the link https://www.heartmath.org/resources/downloads/12-heartmath-tools/ You might want to look at their video on the homepage. Blessings to all of you and wishing you health throughout the year. In these strange times...

Dear Patients
At the moment we are open and operating as normal. We are being meticulous with hygiene, wiping down all surfaces between patients. We request that all patients wash their hands with soap BEFORE as well as after having a treatment. In addition there is hand sanitiser on the reception desk.
If you feel unwell in any way, we request that you ring and cancel your appointment. You will not be charged a cancellation fee. I will post any updates or changes to our clinic as and when we get them.
In the meantime, Mala has sent a link to this insightful and measured podcast.
Happy 20th Birthday Chandos Clinic!

Well it's a bit belated to wish you all a happy new 2020, but I do hope this finds you all well and dry. The Chandos Clinic reception area is always a little haven of warmth, and we're never averse to jackets drying on radiators. Hopefully a glorious spring is just around the corner.

Giles has cut back his work here and is now only working one day a week: Tuesdays. Inevitably he is already booking into May. A reminder that other osteopaths are available!

Our wonderful massage practitioner Maria has built up a good client list and her patients keep coming back for more. As well as working all day Fridays, she now works Weds mornings. If you want to treat someone else, she is happy to organise a credit voucher. If you are interested in seeing her, please ring reception as usual (0117 9745084) and either Pat or Deb will book you in. Her sessions are £45 / hr or £65 for 1.5/hr (cash or cheque only).

Davina continues to see patients occasional Saturday mornings.

We have 2 downstairs practise rooms, so please always let us know, when booking, if you find the stairs difficult, and we will do our best to accommodate you.

We do take cash, but if you could always try to have the correct money, it is most appreciated.

On Valentine's Day, The Chandos Clinic had it's 20th birthday! We celebrated together and are all so proud to be part of such a close, supportive and wonderful team. Giles now has a Chandos rose, white and with a lovely scent. Here's to our next decade as we aspire to bring you relief and comfort.

The Corona Virus is obviously on all our minds. We are being extra vigilant with hand-washing and there is hand gel on the reception desk. If you have any flu-like symptoms, PLEASE stay away! We see very small babies and elderly patients here. Do not think you are inconveniencing us by cancelling at short notice. We will not charge you and would much rather you re-schedule.

We look forward as always to seeing you here.
A little bit of haven.

Many of you who chat with me in reception know I am often escaping to isolated little huts whenever possible. Yesterday a patient let me know about a beautiful space which is on our own doorstep. Tasha at The Cedar Shed offers various treatments in her lovely bespoke building, as well as making it available for other private gatherings. Do have a look at her excellent website; just scrolling through the pages helps everything melt away!
Problems with poo!

Most of you know that Barbara is passionate about her allotment. You may even have seen the proud photos of her newly erected polytunnel! Sadly and seriously, her peas, beans and potatoes have been severely blighted, and on investigation, it transpires it is almost certainly from a herbicide added to straw fed to livestock, which provided the horse / cow manure she added to her soil. If you have suffered the same to your own vegetables, this may well be the cause. Securing your manure from an organic accredited source would be wise. Barbara is trying to get more information from DOW, but in the meantime, would be grateful for any signatures to the petition below.
South Bristol Community Hospital

Over the weekend, a friend was buffeted between her GP and the BRI A&E department, both of them unable or unwilling to help her. Desperate, and in search of alternative care, she found the South Bristol Community Hospital. She said their standard of care was exemplary and she couldn't praise them more highly.

To my shame, I didn't even know it existed, so this is to spread the word. Hopefully you will never need hospital assistance, but if you do, this is certainly a place of calm and efficiency in the storm.

The new kid on the block (around the corner)

We frequently have patients coming through our door who are a wealth of local reveals and inspiration. Therefore I would like to give a huge hurrah and plug to the recently opened Max Minerva's bookshop on North View in Henleaze. Being a Cliftonwooder, I rarely venture that far, but bookshops everywhere should be applauded so do give them your custom and look out for their live events.
Local heroes!

Well bravo to local coffee chain The Boston Tea Party! Even though it substantially affected their sales, they've made a stand on single use plastic, not only cups but all their milk cartons too.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-48448327
With 5 branches in Bristol, and their reach spreading to other towns, it's a very good reason to patronise them over the other great behemoth chains.
Re-usable cups are now readily available (if you're in Clifton Village, support Smaller Footprints on Regent Street) and most drinks outlets will give you a standard 25p off your drink of choice if you present one. My bamboo one travels with me everywhere so I never get caught out.

Here at Chandos Clinic we have been using cardboard water cups for over a year now. We then recycle them, although Barbara has been using them to grow seedlings in her polytunnel!
Spring is in full throttle and the blossom tree over at No Man's Grace (soon to be revamped as a pizza and wine joint we hear) has been glorious. Other changes on Chandos Rd include our new next-door neighbour www.cookingit.co.uk and Pearly King Cake still tantalises us with delicious smells drifting through the door. Normally baking for other retailers, weekends are an opportune time for you and I to buy a slice of something exquisite. Diagonally opposite at no 16, Gina's Beauty has opened and although we are a clinic of many talents, I had to turn away 2 ladies who visited us to get their eyebrows done!

We are now running a full and busy ship with our five osteopaths. Pat and Deb are front of house for all enquiries; even at very short notice we can often provide an appointment. Early morning and mid evening appointments are available throughout the week and Davina continues to work some Saturday mornings. Giles has added another day to his clinic practise and so from May he will work here on Tues and Thurs afternoons; that said, he continues to be very booked up in advance. He always has a waiting list, so if you know you cannot make or no longer need an appointment, please let us know as soon as possible. No shows will be charged the full fee.

Gosia continues to offer homeopathy, kinesiology and reflexology, and Maria practices massage here on Fridays.

Davina's return and 2 Bristol life-lines.

We do hope you all survived the snow last week, short-lived as it was. Happily we managed to remain open on Friday and see all the patients who were able to reach us.

Davina has now returned from Australia and is back at the clinic. She looks forward to greeting all her patients. Sadly we have had to say farewell to her exceptional locum, Kerry. It was a pleasure having her at our practise.

Barbara has brought The Harbour, an admirable Bristol-based charity to my attention, who in turn was told about it from one of her patients, who said what an incredible source of support it had been during her bereavement.

https://www.the-harbour.org.uk

My local tip is Smaller Footprints, a recent addition to Regent St on the edge of Clifton Village. It's a green packaging-free independent shop run by Grant and Hazel. I can vouch that all the produce is incredibly fresh and significantly cheaper than supermarket prices. The dried goods range is vast and being added to all the time; Grant is always happy to try and source requests if there's something they do not stock. All toiletries and cleaning products are available. Likewise oils, vinegars, make-your-own peanut butter, local Bristol honey, and maple syrup. I like the fact that customers are constantly arriving with a whole inventory of there own containers to re-fill. My favourite was a gentleman re-using a glass gin bottle for washing-up liquid!

The Chandos Clinic before will close for the Christmas holidays on Friday 21st Dec, re-opening on Weds 2nd Jan.
Although there will be no osteopathic cover, Deb & Pat will be coming in regularly throughout the holidays to check phone messages, emails, and return calls. So please get in touch and your enquiry will be dealt with swiftly and efficiently!
Davina will be away the whole of January, returning to work Tuesday 5th Feb. While she is away, we will have her wonderful locum Kerry, who will have access to Davina's notes and so there will complete continuity of care. Giles will be returning to us from mid January, Tuesdays only for the time being. He is taking on new patients again.
Also in the new year we can offer massage treatments, holistic, sports and remedial, with our new practitioner, Maria. She will work here on Fridays, and as an introductory offer, her prices are discounted until March 1st. Ring Deb or Pat on reception (0117 9745084) for availability and prices.
Recycling your packaging!

Back when I was a child, there was a short lived fad of baking empty crisp packets in the oven, where they shrunk to the size of dolls house furniture!
Much more useful is the new scheme from Walkers where they've teamed up with TerraCycle, so you can now recycle their crisps packets, making the end product a useful viable building material.
I've looked up the Bristol drop-off centre and it's 36 Birch Rd, Bedminster BS3 1PF.
All this information and more is available on the links below.
The Reader. Bringing People Together and Books to Life.

Once again, chatting with a patient waiting in our reception area, has helped me discover another Bristol gem which I knew nothing about. "Shared Reading" is different from a normal book group, enabling those who are more isolated in our communities and over 50 to come together. Bristol has 30 groups in various venues, including most of our libraries. The organisations Well Aware and Bristol Ageing Better both have excellent information pages, below.
Life Drawing!

Many of you have noticed my picture on the "Join the RWA Friends" flyer, as I always try and put the latest art brochures by the door. When I'm not wearing my clinic receptionist's hat, I work as a life model, and have been doing this for 22+ years.
Bristol is rich with life drawing classes and you would be hard pressed not to find a class at any time, on any day, in most BS postcodes!
This fascinating article from yesterday's "iNews" (which a patient left on a chair) takes a different and revealing (no pun intended) look at the benefits of life drawing on our mental health; most especially for young people who may be struggling with complicated body image issues.
If you ever want to find out where the best life drawing sessions are in the area, be they courses, workshops, or drop-in classes, do just ask me when you're next at the clinic.

https://inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/wellbeing/worried-about-your-appearance-then-take-up-life-drawing/

In the words of Anthony Gormley "A day without drawing, is a day lost!"
